5 Mistakes Killing Your LinkedIn Engagement (And How to Fix Them Before Your Posts Die Again)

Let’s rewind to my early LinkedIn days. I wrote this masterpiece of a post.  In my head, it was brilliant. It had big words like innovative, synergy, and scalable solutions. I imagined recruiters gasping, marketers clapping, and CEOs sending me job offers. I hit “Post.” I waited. I refreshed my notifications every 5 minutes. By the end of the day? Three likes. One from my mum, one from my cousin, and one from a random crypto guy offering me “the opportunity of a lifetime.” That’s when I realised:  my engagement didn’t just drop… it got killed.  And the killer? Bad posting habits I didn’t even know I had. If your posts keep flopping, here are 5 mistakes you’re probably making and exactly how to fix them. 1: Writing Like a Corporate Robot  LinkedIn isn’t your old office notice board.  If your posts sound like they were ripped out of a company policy manual, people will scroll past before you can say leverage cross-functional synergy. How to grow on LinkedIn

So, you just created a LinkedIn account.

Zero followers.
Zero likes.
Zero clue what you’re doing.
You're staring at your empty feed like, “Is this thing even working?”

Relax.
You’re not alone.

Growing on LinkedIn from scratch feels like shouting into a black hole.
But good news:
You don’t need paid tools, premium subscriptions, or one million Canva templates.

You just need your brain, your story, and a sprinkle of consistency.

Let’s break it down.

1. Fix Your LinkedIn Profile ,Like, Right Now

Before you post anything, make sure your LinkedIn profile is not a ghost town.

Here's your glow-up checklist:

✅ Clear, smiling profile picture (not you at a wedding or with Snapchat filters)

✅ Headline that actually says what you do (not “seeking opportunities”  be specific!)

✅ About section written like a human, not a robot

✅ Add relevant keywords like: content writer, digital marketer, software engineer, etc.

✅ Add your skills, experience, and any project , even if it’s school work or personal stuff

People will stalk your profile before connecting or hiring you. Make it worth the visit.

2. Start Posting , Imperfect but Real

You’re probably overthinking your first post.
“Should I post a motivational quote or a thought-provoking insight?”
Breathe.

Post anything that helps people know, like, and trust you.

Here are some content ideas:

📌 Share what you're learning

📌 Tell a short personal story

📌 Post your wins (even small ones)

📌 Ask questions

📌 Share industry tips or news

Just talk like you’re chatting with a friend.
Forget the big grammar. Keep it real.

3. Comment Like Your LinkedIn Life Depends on It

Want organic reach? Comment Daily.

Seriously. Spend 10–15 minutes:

✅ Leaving meaningful comments on people’s posts
✅ Supporting other small creators
✅ Dropping your 2 cents on trending topics

That’s how people discover you.
That’s how the LinkedIn algorithm says, “Aha! This one is active!”

4. Use the Free, No-Tool Growth Strategy

This is your LinkedIn growth hack with zero budget:

Do this daily:

📌 Comment on 3–5 posts

📌 Send 2 connection requests (with a nice note)

📌 Post 1 piece of helpful or fun content (even just 2–3 times a week)

No need for scheduling tools, Chrome extensions, or AI bots.
Just be active and intentional.

5. Talk to People , Not at Them

LinkedIn is for networking, not broadcasting.

Reply to comments. Slide into DMs (professionally, please).
Say thank you when someone engages with your stuff.

Build real connections, not just a follower count.

6. Stay Consistent (Even When Nobody Claps)

Your first 10 posts might get 3 likes , from your mom, your neighbor, and your burner account.

That’s normal.

Keep going.
The algorithm rewards people who don’t give up.

Be patient.
Be persistent.
You’re planting seeds.
Your time will come.

You don’t need to be a guru.
You don’t need fancy gear.
You don’t need a blue checkmark.

What you need is:

✅ A clear profile
✅ Relatable content
✅ Daily engagement
✅ Consistency

Start messy.
Show up.
Speak up.

And one day, someone will say, “Hey, I love your content! I’ve been following you for a while.”

Smile. Because that someone might be your next client, employer, or collab partner.
